The Caliphate Debate, which started in 2020, is one of its kind in the Northern region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is an annual event that aims to enhance the intellects of our teeming youth and hone their oratory skills to articulate substantive cases and arguments backed by logic and facts, thereby creating an avenue to achieve the SDG Goal 4 (Quality Education).
The debate is a British Parliamentary Debate structured to conform to the standards of the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), and serving as a platform to showcase the ideals of the Sokoto Caliphate and to portray it as an erudite and vibrant community in Nigeria and Africa at large.
The previous editions of the Caliphate Debate were huge successes. It saw students from across the state engage in argumentative discourse about multifaceted national and international phenomena. Over the course of the debates, there were substantial improvements in the analytical thinking and logical reasoning skills of the participants and attending delegates.
Eight (8) tertiary institutions comprising of two participants each debated with three teams emerging as the winner, second-best and third-best teams, and three speakers emerging as best, second-best, and third-best speakers. Sokoto State University emerged winners of the First edition, Usmanu Danfodiyo University emerged winners of the second edition and College of Nursing Sciences Tambuwal emerged winners of the third of the edition.
